How to Reset a Plantronics Headset
A reset clears most everyday headset problems in minutes. If your Plantronics (Poly) headset will not connect, will not turn on, drops calls, or the buttons stop responding, the steps below get it working again without a trip to IT.
Before You Reset: Quick Checks
A full reset re-pairs your headset and wipes its saved connections, so it is worth ruling out the simple stuff first. Run through these checks before you reset anything.
Charge it for at least 20 minutes
A deeply drained battery can look like a dead headset. Plug it in, wait until the LED shows a steady charge, then try again. A headset that seems unresponsive is very often just flat.
Check the cable and USB port
For wired and DECT base setups, reseat every cable and try a different USB port directly on the computer (not a hub or a monitor port). A loose or underpowered connection causes most “not detected” problems.
Confirm the mute switch and volume
If people cannot hear you, make sure mute is off (many models announce “mute on” in the ear) and turn the microphone and listening volume up. A muted headset is the most common false alarm on calls.
Resetting Bluetooth Headsets (Voyager Series)
Bluetooth models like the Voyager 5200, Voyager Legend, Voyager Focus 2, and Voyager 8200 UC usually act up because of a stale pairing. Work through these steps in order and stop as soon as the headset connects.
- 1
Soft reset (power off and on)
Turn the headset off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on. On the Voyager 5200 slide the power switch off and on; on the Voyager Focus 2 and 8200 hold the power button for 2 seconds until you hear “Power off,” then again to power on. This clears most temporary glitches.
- 2
Re-enter pairing mode
With the headset on, press and hold the Call button for 5 to 6 seconds until you hear “Pairing” and the LED flashes red and blue. The headset is now discoverable and ready to connect again.
- 3
Clear the pairing list
If it keeps trying to connect to an old device, wipe its memory. Hold the Call button and Volume Down together for about 5 seconds until you hear “Pairing list cleared.” The headset forgets every saved device and starts fresh.
- 4
Remove the headset from your phone
On your phone or PC, open Settings > Bluetooth, find the headset in the list, and choose “Forget” or “Remove.” A stale entry on the phone side is just as common as one on the headset, so clear both.
- 5
Re-pair from scratch
With the headset in pairing mode, select it again from the Bluetooth list on your device and confirm. You should hear “Pairing successful.” For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our headset pairing guide.
Tip: If problems continue after re-pairing, open the free Poly Lens app and check for a firmware update. A firmware refresh often fixes stubborn connection and audio faults that button resets cannot reach.
Resetting DECT Wireless Headsets (Savi Series)
DECT headsets like the Savi 8220 and the Savi 7320/7310 rely on a base station. When the headset stops talking to its base, the fix is to power-cycle the base and re-subscribe the headset.
- 1
Power-cycle the base station
Unplug the base station from power and USB, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Let it settle and confirm the base LED lights up. This alone clears many “no audio” and dropped-link issues.
- 2
Dock the headset
Place the headset in the charging cradle on the base. It needs to be docked for the base to re-register it during the subscription step.
- 3
Start re-subscription on the base
Press and hold the subscription button on the base for 3 to 4 seconds until the base light flashes (usually red and green in sequence). This tells the base to look for a headset to pair with.
- 4
Re-register the headset
With the headset docked and the base flashing, the two pair automatically within a few seconds. The base light goes solid once the headset is registered. If it does not, lift and re-dock the headset while the base is still flashing.
- 5
Test the link
Lift the headset off the base and press the call button. You should hear a connection tone or see the headset appear as an audio device on your PC. Make a test call to confirm both speaking and listening work.
Tip: The exact subscription-button behavior varies slightly between Savi models. If the light does not flash, hold the button a little longer, and check the quick-start card that shipped with your base for the model-specific timing.
Resetting the CS540
The CS540 is a DECT desk-phone headset, so a reset means re-subscribing it to its base. Do this if the headset stops connecting or you have paired it to a replacement base.
- 1
Dock the headset
Set the CS540 headset in the charging cradle on the base station and make sure the base has power.
- 2
Hold the subscription button on the base
Press and hold the subscription button on the base for about 3 seconds until the base LED flashes green and red. This puts the base into pairing mode.
- 3
Let the headset re-subscribe
With the headset docked, it re-registers to the base automatically. The base LED turns solid green once the pairing succeeds. Lift the headset and press the call control button to confirm you hear a dial tone.
Resetting Wired USB Headsets (Blackwire Series)
Wired headsets like the Blackwire 5220 and Blackwire 3220 have no battery or pairing to reset. When they misbehave it is almost always a connection or software issue on the computer, so the “reset” is done on the PC side.
- 1
Unplug and replug into a different port
Pull the USB plug, wait a few seconds, and plug it into a different port directly on the computer. Avoid USB hubs and monitor ports, which do not always supply steady power. This forces the operating system to re-detect the headset.
- 2
Quit conflicting apps
Fully close any app that grabs the microphone (Teams, Zoom, your browser dialer) and reopen just the one you need. Two apps fighting over the headset is a common cause of one-way audio or a dead mic.
- 3
Reset the audio device selection
On Windows go to Settings > System > Sound; on Mac go to System Settings > Sound; then set the Plantronics headset as both input and output. In Teams or Zoom, open the app's audio settings and select the headset there too, separately from the system default.
- 4
Update or reinstall Poly Lens
Install or update the free Poly Lens desktop app (formerly Plantronics Hub), then restart the computer. Poly Lens re-installs the headset drivers and applies the latest firmware, which clears faults a replug cannot fix.
Tip: If the inline call controls (answer, mute, volume) stop working but audio is fine, that is almost always the app-side device setting, not the headset. Re-select the headset inside the meeting app and the buttons come back.
Reset Didn't Help? Try These
If a reset did not solve it, work through these before contacting support. Each one targets a different common cause.
Check the firmware in Poly Lens
Out-of-date firmware causes connection drops, audio distortion, and button faults that no reset can fix. Open the free Poly Lens app on desktop or mobile, connect the headset, and install any available update.
Try another USB port or device
Plug the headset (or its base or USB adapter) into a different port, ideally on a different computer. If it works elsewhere, the problem is the original port, hub, or PC configuration, not the headset.
Headset still will not turn on
Charge it on a known-good cable and adapter for at least an hour, then try the soft reset again. If there is no LED activity at all after charging, the battery or charging port may have failed and the unit likely needs service.
Contact HP (Poly) support
If none of the above works, the headset may be defective or in need of warranty service. Have your model number and proof of purchase ready and contact HP support, which now handles Poly and Plantronics products.
